The Pedi. And here's one more community!!
Les Pedi se trouvent autour de Polokwane, au nord du
pays. Ils seraient des descendants des Maroteng qui, au XVIe siècle,
vivaient près des source du Vaal - affluent du fleuve Orange.
The Pedi are located around Polokwane, north of the country. According to oral tradition, the Pedi can be traced back to the Maroteng. It is believed that centuries ago, around 1500, the Maroteng were living near the source of the Vaal.

Les Sothos sont un grand groupe, subdivisé en plusieurs: les Basotho
(Sotho du sud), les Pedi (Sotho du nord) et les Tswana (Sotho de
l'ouest). /
The Sothos are a big group, that can be subdivided into several: the
Basothos (Southern Sotho), the Pedi (Northern Sothos) and the Tswanas
(Western Sothos).
Les Basothos dont je vous montre quelques croquis cette
semaine, peuplent aujourd'hui le Lesotho, ce petit royaume au centre de
l'Afrique du Sud, dans les montagnes. /
This week I'm showing you sketches of the Basotho community. Since the
mid 1800s, they are mostly living in Lesotho, a kingdom right in the
middle of mountains. Its territory is an enclave within South Africa's
borders.
Pendant et après leur initiation, les femmes Basotho peignent leurs visages et leurs corps avec de l'argile jaune et/ou rouge / Both during and after their initiation, Basotho women paint their faces and bodies with red and yellow clay.

Pendant les vacances, je suis tombée sur un petit jeu de Lady Isa sur son blog Jardinement votre
(cette superwoman a 3 blogs!!! mais comment fait-elle???). Il
s'agissait de composer des bouquets avec les fleurs du jardin et dans
un récipient autre qu'un vase...
During the holidays, I saw a game Lady Isa proposed on one of her blogs, Jardinement Votre
(this superwoman has 3 blogs!!! how does she do it???). People were
supposed to make bouquets with flowers from their gardens only and
using a container that would not be a (boring) traditional vase...
Je suis allée voir les réalisations et c'était tellement chouette, que j'ai eu envie de les croquer. I went to see all the different bouquets people had created, and it was so beautiful, I felt the urge to sketch them.
Moi qui ne suis pas habituée à croquer de la végétation et des
bouquets, j'ai galéré, mais j'ai préféré opter pour la rapidité pour
éviter de tomber dans le piège du trop lourd et pour laisser à ces
bouquets toutes leur fraîcheur. Je n'ai pas pu tous les croquer car il
s'en rajoutait tous les jours, et que certains me semblaient impossible
à croquer (à tort?), mais quand même j'ai réussi à en faire 17!
I'm not much used to sketching vegetation and
bouquets, I struggled a lot, and I decided to opt for quick sketches to
avoid from sketching something too heavy and to leave them as fresh as
possible. I didn't manage to sketch them all, a/ because new ones kept
appearing everyday on her blog, then b/ because some of them seemed
impossible to sketch, but I still mannaged to sketch 17 of them!
Je ne les avais pas regardés depuis plusieurs semaines et je les
trouve finalement pas mal, alors que sur le moment tout me semblait
médiocre... Finalement, c'était un excellent exercice pour moi! Alors
merci encore à Lady Isa pour ton idée et pour avoir publié tous mes
croquis alors que mon blog était en pause, et merci à tous ceux qui ont
réalisé d'aussi jolis bouquets - et désolée pour ceux que je n'ai pas
croqué... Une prochaine fois?
I hadn't had a look at them for weeks, and I
finally think they are not so bad, although at the time they all seemed
poor... All in all, it was an excellent exercice for me! So thank you
again Lady Isa for your idea, and for having kindly published all my
sketches on her blog while mine was on a break, and thanks to all those
who created such wonderful bouquets - and sorry to those I didn't
sketch. Some other time maybe?

Aujourd'hui, une nouvelle communaute d'Afrique du Sud, les Ndebele / Today, here's another South African culture, the Ndebeles:
Les femmes Ndebeles sont célèbres pour les peintures qu'elles effectuent sur les murs de leurs maisons, sur des poteries, mais aussi pour l'artisanat en perle . Elles portent des couleurs vives et des anneaux autour du cou, symbole de richesse. Leurs atours sont si aprétés qu'elles ont souvent l'air de poupées raides et déshumanisées.
Women Ndebeles are famous for their art: mural paintings, and beadwork. They wear colourful clothes and heavy jewelry; their neck rings are a sign of wealth; now they can remove the brass neck rings but in the olden days they were permanently fastened around a woman's neck. In my opinion they often look like dolls with all their finery...

Jusqu'à présent, sur les pages de ce livre, je vous ai montré des croquis d'une seule ethnie d'Afrique du Sud, les zoulous. Je vais essayer de faire le tour de toutes les ethnies (accrochez-vous, il y en a plus de 10, sans compter les sous-groupes dans chaque!!)
/ So far, on the pages of this book, I've only showed you sketches of zulu women. I'm going to try and sketch the different cultures of South Africa (be brave, there are more than 10 of them - not mentioning the 'subdivision' in each community!)
Commençons aujourd'hui avec les XHOSA (sud est de l'Afrique du Sud, ethnie de Mandela)
/ Let's start with the Xhosa (South East, Mandela is a Xhosa)
(Une fois ménopausées, les femmes mariées Xhosa sont sur un pied d'égalité avec les hommes: elles ont le droit de fumer la longue pipe typique et d'assister aux cérémonies traditionnelles / Once they have passed menopause, married Xhosa women are socially on a par with men: they are entitled to smoke a long-stemmed pipe and to attend traditional rituals)
